Cleanse Your Home the Biblical Way

Cleanse Your Home of Negative Spirits (The Biblical Way)

Is there anyone who doesn’t enjoy a scrubbed, clean house? In the physical, that is… But, have you ever thought about how to cleanse your home? Some things carry evil spirits that we should not have in our dwellings.

I felt the presence of something evil in my home when I was a child. I was too young to know about evil spirits, cleansing a home, or about my power and authority in Christ, I felt terrifying fear: Thinking ghosts were in my house. We can do so much through the power of the Holy Ghost (the only real ghost!). Our children need to know that cleansing power, too!

But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; Acts 1:8

What is an Unclean Spirit

While the singular use of the word devil is the word diablos, which is Satan, there’s a different meaning when the word devil is the plural form: devils. The KJV Bible does not use the word “demon.” Here is what it means if we look into the Greek words where the word “devils” is used.

Demon or Devils: (Greek diamon or diamonion according to the Strong’s Concordance):

  1. the divine power, deity, divinity
  2. a spirit, a being inferior to God, superior to men
  3. evil spirits or the messengers and ministers of the devil

How Do Unclean Spirits Enter the Home?

Demons/unclean spirits can enter our residence when we bring something into our home they have attached themselves to. When we watch demonic media, and we allow our children to watch it, too, we open up a door for evil spirits to enter.

When we bring an item used to worship other gods into our home, we give unclean spirits access to our house and family.. Other popular detestable objects would be: charms, crystals, ritual items, voodoo dolls, etc.

Signs of an Unclean Spirit

You might need to cleanse your house of evil spirits, if…

  • You have no peace in your home. Everyone is fighting and at odds with each other.
  • You discern something isn’t right.
  • Someone returned from an international trip and brought back an object.
  • Pornography in the home
  • Spiritual attacks at home
  • After watching something on TV or any other kind of media, one can feel a demonic presence.
  • After visitors in the home came and left, the atmosphere feels different
  • A person in the home is practicing witchcraft.
  • A family member is in emotional bondage.

How to Cleanse Your Home (the Biblical Way)

We can pray!

Here is a simple cleansing prayer:

We can cut off Curses, Hexes, and Incantations

Do you know anything about the previous owners of the house? Do you know anything about the land before the house was built? It is always a good idea to break off any curses, word curses, hexes or incantations that may have been spoken in the house or over the land.

Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”), that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. Galatians 3:13-14

Here is a sample prayer for breaking off curses:

Father, thank you that every curse is broken in the name of Your Son Jesus! Thank you that whatever happened in the past in this home or on this land is under the blood of Jesus! All curses go, in Jesus’ name. The Power in the name of Jesus renders all hexes, incantations, or any word curse null and void. No name under Heaven more powerful! Thank you Jesus for freedom in this house and on this land!

Sometimes demons are given permission to operate in a certain place. The enemy may not play fair but he only does what he does with legal permission. He can’t go in unless allowed. So therefore, anything that opened a door to the demonic in your home has to be closed, shut down. This article might help clarify the matter:

Remove “Harboring Objects”

An example of an object of harboring affection would be a love letter or a piece of jewelry given to a woman by a former boyfriend. The woman is now married to someone else, but still has in her possession the token of affection from another.

The object could be something as blatant as a voodoo doll of someone you hate that you stink pins in every day. You would be harboring resentment and unforgiveness toward that person. It could even be something not so obvious, like a gift given with an intent that does not glorify God. Anything a person has an inordinate affection for, whether negative or positive, from a previous relationship might need to be prayed about and gotten rid of if God so leads.

Sample Prayer:

PRAYER: Father, I ask you to show me if there is anything in my house that represents unforgiveness. Show me if there is anything that I have that I am keeping because I still have feelings for a person thats not my spouse. Help me to break any soul ties. Whatever it takes to clean my house, I will do it. Thank you Jesus!

Make it Uncomfortable for Unclean Spirits to Stay

Speak the word in your home, and make it a place where no demon feels welcome. Speak positive words to your family. If complaining or speaking negatively comes naturally, say the opposite.

So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God. Romans 8:8

We cannot rely on our flesh to do something that needs to be led by the spirit. Make it uncomfortable for evil spirits. Fill your home with praise and wholesome words! Make the enemy say, “I can’t stay in this place!” That’s the statement we want to hear from a harassing, unclean spirit!

Speak Blessings, Scripture, and Play Worship Music

This last thing a spirit wants to hear is us blessing God, reading His Word, or playing anointed worship music. Better yet, sing the Word, that really drives them crazy!

Guard the “Gates” of Your Home

As a parent, guardian, renter, homeowner, or landowner, it is your spiritual duty to be the guardian of your home. This includes watching what children are bringing into the home. Sounds easy, but it is not! There were two instances during the time my kids were at home that I specifically remember dealing with this issue. And boy, was it hard. But with God’s help, I did it. I found beer in my refrigerator, but poured it out in the yard. In another instance, I marched up my staircase, grabbed a girl out of my son’s bed, and put them both outside. My son rebelled against my stance, but I am more concerned about pleasing God and setting spiritual boundaries.

Remove Entertainment that Pollutes the Home

We have to watch what we allow to come in our house under the guise of entertainment. I have heard people say, “It’s just a movie.” or “It’s only TV, we all know it’s not real.”

Kids don’t know it’s not real. It isn’t just entertainment. TV programming programs our minds. Entertainment can be desperately wicked. Would we allow someone to come into our house and blaspheme the name of the Lord the way “entertainment” does? We can’t unsee the filth once we have ingested it with our eyes and ears.

Use discernment with “entertainment” and the objects permitted in the home.

What NOT to Do When Cleansing the Home

1. We don’t burn sage or or smudge to cleanse the home

In the Bible, Moses did prepare a specific blend of spices and herbs to burn as incense to the Lord. He did not however, burn sage or smudge, as it’s called today. Smudging roots are in Native American rituals.

We should not look to the world to find ways to spiritually clean our house. The world says burn sage. The world says align your chakras. Meditation, smudging and mind cleansing are new age methods. We should stay far away from such practices. These open up doors to demons, which is not exactly what we need. Stay away from crystals, use of salt, salt lamps, practicing yoga. Even using essential oils can be a new age practice. None of these practices are of any benefit to those wanting to cleanse their home.

And the Lord said unto Moses, Take unto thee sweet spices, stacte, and onycha, and galbanum; these sweet spices with pure frankincense: of each shall there be a like weight: And thou shalt make it a perfume, a confection after the art of the apothecary, tempered together, pure and holy: And thou shalt beat some of it very small, and put of it before the testimony in the tabernacle of the congregation, where I will meet with thee: it shall be unto you most holy. And as for the perfume which thou shalt make, ye shall not make to yourselves according to the composition thereof: it shall be unto thee holy for the Lord. Exodus 30:34-38

2. We do not Permit Demonic Symbols

Even symbols we have in our home can open doors to evil spirits. I found this article very interesting. Even the wrong kind of cross or the star of David, may need to be thrown out.

Keeping Bad Spirits Out of Your House For Good

Just like we use security systems to ensure our physical safety in our home, we need to use spiritual methods to ensure our home is safe from evil spirits. Here are some notes on how to make that happen!

  • Be diligent, if anything seems not right, pray about it
  • Be on top of what’s going on with your kids, what they bring into your home
  • Do not give unsupervised access to the television or electronics to children
  • If it were me, I’d burn all the objects that are blatantly anti-christ in nature. (That’s right, I would not sell them on Ebay!)
  • Play worship music everyday
  • Attend church regularly, be serious about your faith
  • Be filled with the Holy Spirit, He will show you things that you never knew
  • Pray, pray, pray!

Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints—Ephesians 6:18
